PORT

Common TCP/UDP Port Numbers | CyberNcrypt

Ever wonder how the internet operates? How can you send and receive pictures, emails, phone calls, and view websites from the comfort of your home using an internet-connected device? These actions are dependent on the TCP and UDP port numbers. What are these ports and how do they function?

Prior to delving further into the subject, you must understand what a port is. Ports allow computers to communicate with and connect to other computers on a network. This port is not a physical component, but rather a virtual connection point between two or more computers. The most prevalent ports on the Internet are TCP and UDP.

What Are TCP Ports?

TCP is a connection-oriented protocol that stands for Transmission Control Protocol. In networking, protocols are the rules or specifications that govern the transmission of data between devices. TCP is known as a connection-oriented protocol because it establishes a connection between the sending and receiving devices prior to data transmission.

What Are UDP Ports?

User Datagram Protocol (UDP) is the abbreviation for User Datagram Protocol. User Datagram Protocol is connectionless, so a host device can send data to a recipient without first establishing a connection. UDP ports are contingent on UDP/IP protocols. UDP ports include the DNS port (53), the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol port (68), and the gaming-related Kerberos port (88).
